Greenhouse gases absorb solar energy and keep heat near the Earth’s surface instead of letting it escape into space. This heat capture is known as the greenhouse effect.
Why do we need to care about this? Greenhouse gas concentrations are currently affecting our planet’s weather and climate systems causing the well-known “Climate Change”. This encompasses not only the increase in average temperatures known as global warming, but also extreme weather events, changes in wildlife populations and habitats, rising sea levels, and many other effects.
To understand the seriousness of the matter: the world only has one-fifth of its ‘carbon budget’ left (the total is 2.8 trillion metric tons) to prevent the Earth from warming more than 1.5 degrees Celsius.
All sectors of the global economy, from manufacturing to agriculture, including transportation and energy production, contribute greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
The good news is that the technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions already exist: replacing fossil fuels with renewable sources, increasing energy efficiencyand discouraging carbon emissions by putting a price on them.
The right incentives could drive the world to achieve up to one-third of the carbon reductions needed by 2030. The pathways to limit the global temperature increase to 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius, as targeted by the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), depend partly on adopting methods to extract CO2 from the atmosphere. These methods include tree planting, conserving existing forests and grasslands, and capturing CO2 from power plants and factories.
But first, we cannot act on what we do not know. To put all this into motion, we need technologies to measure the amount of gases we are producing. This is the only way to take specific actions to start solving this problem.
